Honda is not so active in the truck market. Their only representative there is a Ridgeline. Although the Japanese company is well-known for its reliability and quality in other segments, in the pickup segment it can’t be called a leader. However, their only model is pretty attractive. The company is doing everything to keep up the pace with the competition. The Type R is the special edition of any Honda’s model. The Ridgeline truck will get the new package very soon. What’s more, it will get a new engine. Instead of a more powerful conventional unit, we will see the 2020 Honda Ridgeline Hybrid.
To be honest, of all trucks we can only imagine Ridgeline riding on a hybrid engine. It never was one of these big vehicles for towing. Instead, the truck is a modern, futuristic model that can work and show off. Numerous upgrades are making the pickup less functional. The utility is not the only priority. The Japanese manufacturer will show us so with 2020 Honda Ridgeline Hybrid.
2020 Honda Ridgeline Hybrid vs Type R
Honda wants to make a big impact with the new 2020 Honda Ridgeline Hybrid. Well, the entire nameplate should be under the spotlight in the next couple of seasons. Hybrid truck is interesting by itself. Besides it, the Ridgeline is going to introduce a long-awaited Type R. The performance-oriented truck already caused a lot of interest. Now it is time for its production. While the Ridgeline Hybrid is still uncertain for 2020, the other model could be launched even in 2019. All in all, these debuts will increase chances of Honda’s truck against Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, and Ford Ranger.
2020 Honda Ridgeline Hybrid Drivetrain
The 2020 Honda Ridgeline Hybrid could borrow the engine from its sibling, Acura MDX. This SUV is pretty capable for its size. Also, two base models are using the same 3.5-liter V-6 engine. For the truck, the drivetrain can put up 10 horses less, 280 hp total. But, the MDX is not using this engine for its hybrid setup. Instead, engineers opted for a 3.0-liter unit. Its power is boosted by electric motors in Sport Hybrid model. Combined, the powertrain returns 321 hp and 289 lb-ft of torque. If a truck with the same petrol unit delivers 10 ponies less than the SUV, then the Hybrid could expect the same gap. So, the 2020 Ridgeline Hybrid is about to create 311 horses if the same 3.0-l unit is under the hood.
But, the 2020 Honda Ridgeline Hybrid could use some other setup based on the petrol engine the regular model is using. In that case, the output could go up to 350 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. Well, the hybrid truck is not going to increase the towing capacity. With some boosts, the Ridgeline could reach 7,000 pounds. On the other hand, fuel economy gets significant improvements. Some experts believe the pickup could offer up to 30 mpg. But, it is more realistic to see 2020 Ridgeline Hybrid with 27-28 mpg both for city and highway drive.
2020 Honda Ridgeline Hybrid Release Date
The truck is not coming so soon. There are only rumors about it, while the Honda Ridgeline Type R more certain to appear. So, we are sure that performance-oriented version is coming before its hybrid sibling. Either way, we won’t see 2020 Honda Ridgeline Hybrid or Type R before the last quarter of 2019 in the best case.
Honda Ridgeline is not a leader in small pickup segment with its utility specs. But, the pickup is versatile and innovative. This makes it very interesting for drivers that don’t need it for towing. Type R is going to be a sporty truck, the class that is in history books for some time. Truckmakers are not producing these anymore, since crossovers are now more attractive. With such model and the 2020 Honda Ridgeline Hybrid out in the market, this nameplate will add options that no other pickup is offering. That is Ridgeline’s main strength and advantage.
