The segment of mid-size pickup trucks has been growing in the past few years so we expect that premium brands will get involved in the near future as well. One of the carmakers that has a lot of potentials to offer such a vehicle is Acura. Honda’s premium line has been making some great crossovers in the past few years and a unibody truck seems perfect for something that has the reputation of a premium car. Therefore, we count that the new pickup truck could arrive along with the next-generation Acura MDX, which is expected to hit the market in a year or two. At this point, the company officials are still quiet on this matter, so we can only rely on rumors. Therefore, take the following paragraphs with a big reserve.
Acura Pickup Truck Concept Design
In terms of base design characteristics, the first thing that comes to mind is a unibody platform. Honda has a lot of experience in making such trucks, considering that the Ridgeline has been around for a full 15 years. Such design seems perfect for a truck with a premium badge. The reason is simple and it lays in the fact that unibody pickup trucks are actually nothing more than crossovers with a bed. Such a design ensures superior driving experience over traditional body-on-frame trucks. The ride is much smoother, while the comfort is on a significantly higher level. Add to this lighter curb weight and you may count on better efficiency as well.
The Acura Pickup Truck Concept is expected to come along with the new generation of the mid-size MDX and two models should share most of the parts. This also means a lot of things in common with models like next-gen Honda Ridgeline and Pilot, which should arrive a couple of years later.
When it comes to the styling, there’s no doubt that the Acura Pickup Truck Concept will be fitted to the brand’s newest design language. As we are talking about a concept, we may look a lot of futuristic upgrades as well. However, we don’t expect it would go too far away from the potential production model.
If you want to imagine how the pickup from Acura would actually look like, a good way would be to take a look at the Chinese model called Gold Cup S70. This Chinese truck comes in a double cab layout and the most intriguing thing about it is that it features a front end that closely resembles Acura models. There is a familiar shield grille, while headlights are designed in a similar manner as well.
Of course, Acura definitely won’t seek for inspiration in a cheap Chinese copy. There’s no doubt that the new Acura Pickup Truck Concept would feature a front face that is very close to the one the new RDX has. On the other side, we do expect to see a double or crew cab layout, with a lot of space on the inside.
Acura Pickup Truck Concept Engine
When it comes to the powertrain, it is hard to say what would be under the hood of the Acura Pickup Truck Concept. It may be some kind of a hybrid powertrain or some brand-new gasoline engine. On the other side, we may presume that the possible production version would come with some of the familiar units. Of course, the first one that comes to mind is a well-known 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine, which is currently good for about 280 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Of course, we would probably see some form of electrification as well. For example, the current MDX comes with a quite powerful hybrid system, which is based on a 3.0-liter V6 engine and delivers a total output of 321 horsepower. It won’t be a surprise if we see an upgraded version of this system, or even something completely new.
When it comes to the interior of this truck, it is hard to talk about any specific details. More things will be known once the new MDX arrives. We presume that the Acura Pickup Truck Concept will have pretty much the same interior as the mid-size crossover, particularly in terms of the dashboard design. This means we may count on a pretty luxurious cabin, full of hi-quality materials and with plenty of tech features.
On the other side, we may presume that this truck would arrive in some kind of a crew cab layout only. This already works great in Honda Ridgeline, which is very spacious and comfortable in both rows. We may expect that this cabin would be even bigger.
When Can We See Acura Pickup Truck Concept?
We are still waiting for the official confirmation for the Acura Pickup Truck Concept. Still, there are various sources that suggest the new truck could be presented at some major car show in a year or two. More details should be known when the new MDX comes out.
